Lock, Stock and two Smoking Barrels

Lock, stock and two smoking barrels is a gangster film and it starts off with one of the main characters selling stolen goods to customers. They know it is stolen and so do we as he is not afraid to say they are. His attempt to be arrogant pays off as he comes across as demanding and confident. You can only hear his banter going on besides the mumbling of the crowd. He is selling jewellery what seems to be an ally way or street corner. There are no other market stalls there so we know he doesn’t to be seen which indicates he is up to no good. In between shots of the acting of the opening sequence there are black backgrounds with typewriting white font which is the opening credits. This helps to introduce the film. Even though the opening credits come in between the acting we can still hear the man selling the goods. This opening sequence sets the main concept of the film. Criminals running against the law. What helps us relies this is that at the end of the opening sequence they are running from the cops.

The first shot of this film it is a medium over the shoulder shot. You can see a man standing behind what seems to be some form of a market stall and there is a crowd of people standing looking at him and at what he is trying to sell them. They seem to be interested in what he is saying as they are continually looking at him. The setting looks like its in an ally way, not many people would sell or buy there unless they are up to no good and don’t want to get caught.
The second shot within this sequence is a close up shot of the man who is selling the stolen goods. With this being a close up shot it indicates that this character is a main character in this shot and his presence is significant. The man has a skin head haircut and appears to be wearing all black. This could indicate that he doesn’t want to be noticed or show who he really is (personality wise). Also by looking at what the crowd are wearing , the majority of them are in brown which makes the man stand out in black. When the man speaks his voice has a cockney accent and he uses colloquial language to talk banter to his customers. This suggests to the viewers that he is from a lower class. He seems to be selling stolen jewellery and doesn’t seem to mind to tell them as he says in an abrupt manner "If you can see value here today, your not happy shopping: your happy shop lifting".
The third shot is of the production titles and it says "The Steve Tisch company". It is on a black background and the writing is in white. The font of the writing gives the impression of a typewriter font. This could suggest to the viewers that the theme of this film is going to be poverty and people from a lower class background. this is because type writers were an old fashioned writing. Also because the movie was produced by and unknown production company this can suggest that it is an independent film and may only appeal to certain people.
The forth shot is a close up of the man selling the stolen jewellery again. By constantly doing close ups of this man the director is trying boast the importance of him being there and that he is a main character. This man is perceived as a petty criminal as he is just selling stolen jewellery at the back of an ally way.
Within the fifth shot the camera is immersed within the crowd that is viewing the man. This can give the effect that were part of the crowd looking to buy/know of him. The man is beginning to get the jewellery out of it's packaging, this builds suspense for the viewer because they will finally get to see the jewellery that he has been boasting about for so long.
The sixth shot is of title saying "Ska films". The font and background are the same as the third shot. ,
The next shot is of the man again. Yet again it is a close up shot, signifying that he is the most important part of the whole opening sequence because through out the whole scene so far the focus has been around him. All the cameras are at and medium angle shots or close up shots or at eye level and are able to focus on him comfortably. This could suggest to the viewers that he is going to be a significant part of the whole film and the director wants them to build a relationship with him.
The shot after is of a title that reads "Presents". This is also like the previous shot titles plain and original. All of the shots have been carefully thought out and it can be shown through this shot. this is because the next shot is of the man finally presenting the jewellery to the customers. This shows that the placement of this was thought through thoroughly could signify to the viewers that every detail of the film will be perfected.
This ninth shot is a medium shot of the man and the camera shot within the crowd and focusing on the man holding up the box of jewellery.
The tenth shot is a medium shot of a new character. We now get the picture that while the camera was immersing with the crowd was because we were seeing it through his eyes. He is also wearing black which could indicate that he is an important character as he stands out from the rest of the crowd. He repeats the price of the jewellery being sold, while the man replies ‘are you deaf‘. This shows that the man is quite rude but the customer is still happy to buy. This shows that he is also quite dominating. With using this type of insult towards him it could suggest to the viewer that they may
know each other.
The shot after that is a close up shot of the mans head. He is still talking to the crowd trying to get them to buy the products off him. He does this buy being quite cynical ‘ left leg, right leg, your body will follow. We call it walking’.
This is the twelfth shot and again it is the plain black background with the typewriter font. This time it says ‘a matthew vaughn production’. We can still here the man bantering on, this time it sounds like he is talking to a women ‘you want one as well darling’, instead of being rude like he was to the male customer, he is polite to the woman. This shows that he is stereotypical to women.
In this shot the man selling still uses his lines to engage the customers in buying. It seems to work because the customers are handing him money while he is packing the jewellery in to a bag to give to them.
This fourteenth shot is of the other man, he appears to be looking to left, this makes the viewer wonder what he could be looking for. This could arouse even more
suspicion that he is connected to the man selling the jewellery and he is on look out for him in case they get caught selling stolen goods.
In a following shot it is again the black background and white typewriting font saying ‘a guy ritchie film’.
Soon after, in this shot we can a hear background sound (other then the crowd noises) of a couple of beeps to start off with then it goes into a fast beat of drums.
The following shot is of the first buyer telling the other man that there are coppers coming.
Then the next shot is a close up shot of the man selling quickly throws all the goods into a suitcase which previously was used as a table so he could sell. Now they are both making a quick get a way. This shows the viewers that these two men were connected all along they were working together to make sure that they didn't get caught. By knowing this the viewer may think that the men are going to be working together throughout the whole film.
After that there is a shot of two coppers running past the crowd to get the two man running in front of them.
Shot 20 is the final shot. It is a long shot of the two men running towards the camera. The camera pans round with them while they are running and it is now a medium shot. We can now see the back of them as they jump over an obstacle while the two coppers follow behind them this is now a long shot as we can see the two men running in a longer distance. The music playing in the background suits this part of action as it is upbeat and lively. It suit’s the lower class, grunge down society that they are in. It also fits in with the chase.

Evaluation

In our opening sequence of media film, we focus our attention mainly on character ‘Poppy Iris’ played by Phillippa Davis. We’ve aimed to base are genre of the film mainly on teen horror. We see this girl walking through corridors then into a toilet cubicle. This is where she experiences fear, distress and other overwrought feelings. After throwing up and pacing around, she gets a phone call, which seems to make her anxious and leads to her taking her anger out on trashing the toilet cubicle. When she is now sobbing on the floor the lights suddenly cut out, and underneath the toilet cubical, there is a pair of feet waiting outside before we see a shot of that person’s hand reaching out for scared Poppy screaming. This opening sequence ends with the camera zooming in on a running tap while Poppy’s screams are still being heard and the title of the film ‘Teenage Tragedy’ appearing. Most openings for films usually start off by introducing the main characters. In some horror movies they start off good then things start to go bad. But in other horror films they start off with terror and keep it going through the whole film or it goes into a flash back that leads up to the event. What we decided was to have the opening sequence to base the whole concept of the film.
The situation that the character perceives in the opening of the film, relates to others in unavoidable circumstances which lead to devastating results. we are aware she is in the toilet as a safe place then later on with another person whom she is trying to avoid, when it ends at cliff hanger of her screaming. The camera work is another example of how certain shots are used in order to present the status of the character The high angle shots in the product display Poppy trashing the toilet cubicle, it shows her as a victim as the camera is pointing down at her, making her seem vulnerable and show that she will be a victim of what is yet to come.
The location of the opening sequence is in the corridors and in the toilet cubicle. We chose to have it in a school because it establishes the indication that this is a teen genre. It also indicates that the mysterious hand who comes after Poppy has more dealings with her then we thought ( goes to school with her).
As this film has a teen genre, I can relate this to the film to ‘successful British teen drama ‘Skins’. Skins is teen drama mainly aimed at youths. Even though the opening sequence of Teenage Tragedy is only two minutes and the only teenager is Poppy, I regard that the genre is also to do with youth. Although the title is a big give away at the end of the opening sequence, before that there are aspects that identify as youth. First of by what the actress is wearing. Her costume shows the youth of Poppy. When there is a close up of her hand slammed against the wall we see the bracelets she is wearing on her hand, which are not a typical choice for an adult to wear, which narrows it down to youths. Also the colour and state of nail varnish indicates status and immaturity of a teen. Again when we see the hand reaching out for Poppy, the person is wearing black, chipped nail varnish. This shows that this person has a lot on their mind by scratching their nails a lot.
By the two characters wearing black nail varnish, opens up a new range of target audience. Emo’s and Goth’s relate to the colour black a lot, and seeing the colour of the nail varnish could make them interact with the film more. The colour represents power, death, sadness, and sometimes can be categorized as deceitful and dishonest. For the viewers to see the black nail varnish they have an indication of bad vibe in the opening sequence.
The background music played against the opening sequence of Teenage Tragedy is called trudge which is played all the way through the sequence. It fits in perfectly with the film, from when the titles come up, to the change in beat when Poppy starts pacing around. The sound of the music playing helps tie in the emotions of what Poppy experiences. For example when Poppy trashes the cubical out of anger it fits in because we placed that shot in to two swap shots in slow motion. The music there is quite slow and calm but ferocious at the same time. This music represents youth because it is an alternative rock genre which is mostly listen to by young people.
In the opening sequence of skins when the main character Tony does his morning workout, he does it along side music. The music he is listening to is within beat to is exercise. This film is mostly aimed at youths/ people aged 15- 24 because like the title says ‘Teenage Tragedy’ it seems to be about teenagers. This film mainly based on a horror youth drama may interests people who like films like ‘Final Destination’ or ‘I know what you did last summer‘. I think the film might appeal to more girls then boys as the opening sequence starts off with a girl and there is know reference to the male gender. Males tend to like action based films more than females. I think for the males to be intrigued with the film, will of have to be more engaged when they see the action part of Poppy trashing the toilets. Teenagers who have a similar place in mind might engage with the film more. Poppy is distress and pacing around comes across that she has something on her mind and through out the film we realise she can’t cope with what is going on. Teenagers who have a similar situation ( struggling with the coming of age moment) would feel the same that they can’t cope with family. Friends exams and might be going through a rough time. Both Poppy and the viewer can connect with this.
Who ever the viewer is they might be attracted to the film because of the music being played (alternative/rock). People who like that genre of music might make them more appealing to the film. The music does sound modern so again around the age group of 15- 24 (give or take a few years). People with a status of being a cliché of an alternative/indie/rock personality. It could also be aimed at middle class white people. As the main character is a white female herself, white females will relate to Poppy more then any other ethnic group. There is a sense that Poppy could be middle class from her formal language. When talking on the phone, even in fear and frustration, she doesn’t put a word out of place and she doesn’t give off an informal impression.
Before we did are questionnaire we based are target audience on being 15-24 years old/teenagers, who prefer horror teen films. We were not certain on what ethnicity we will attract more or social class. We decide that who ever prefers teen horror films like final destination then they would like our film. When we actually did our questionnaire we came to our conclusion that are main target audience were 15-18 year olds and the people who said they were going to see it in cinema were mainly Indie white females. Some of the people who took the questionnaire stated that they will be more likely to see it in the cinema if it was advertised well. For example if we had a higher budget we could put web links and groups up on facebook and have trailers placed on msn hotmail there would be more of a chance of them wanting to go view it in the cinema.
With the film having the name of Lion Gate (one of the major independent filmed entertainment studios), people might recognize the name and compare it to other major films that the company have produced such as the Saw films, which are horror films. We have Lion Gate at the start of our opening sequence before we see any part of the actual film. When the first thing we see is a floor level medium shot of Poppy walking slightly towards the camera. The camera is still until her feet are walking past and it becomes a medium shot of Poppy still walking in the corridor. Here is when ‘Revolver Entertainment’ appears in a normal font, it appears in the bottom right and then the two words leave by having ‘Revolver’ going right and ‘Entertainment’ going left. Revolver Entertainment is a USA film distributor based here in the UK. There first major feature film was recently Shank. This is a British teen action movie, purely focusing on the youth generation.
The filming of our opening sequence took longer than we expected it to be.When we started to edit are film product, there was quite a lot of decisions on what to get rid of, what to change and what to add in. To get the opening sequences of a maximum time on 2minuets, we had to cut out parts that even though took up only 0.5 seconds to make the film look intact. For example, the match on action shot on Poppy walking through the door, we had to take off a second so it could look perfected. This was the second time editing a film and we had to again get used to the editing process Experimenting with what music we would use and considering if we were going to add any extras into the film is what we were perfecting the most. There were about three different choices of music for the sequence, with different lengths. We first maybe wanted to do more of a horror sound, but because of the surroundings it didn’t fit as much. But the music that we chose (trudge) was, as it suited the genre of youth and the suspiciousion /anger of horror.
Adding the two snap shots between the parts where Poppy starts to trash the toilet cubical can either appeal to the viewers in two different ways. In our questionnaire some people said that it was a good edit to the film but others said it made the film unrealistic and cheesy against the music playing.
Looking back at our preliminary task, I think that are camera techniques have improved, because before when we started it out, the shots would come out shaky. And now the control of the angels and zooms of a shot is more acceptable then before.
With our opening sequence we have experimented with different types of shots to make it appeal better. We’ve learnt how to perfect high angle shots and improved on are match on action shots.
I do think that there is a bit of similarity between both as in the preliminary task we put in slow motion and action at the same time and in this task there is again a slow motion shot with action. From doing the preliminary task to the opening sequence, I feel that I’ve been more evolved in making the opening sequence. In the preliminary task, it was basic enough to just shoot the production and with the editing I didn’t know much about the iMovie application so it was uneasy to edit it without help. But second time around with the opening sequence, I was able to part direct the sequence and part edit it. I gave my views across as I was more confident using the technology. It paid off because I think that we did a good job with this project.
If I were to change or improve this product, I would want it to come across as an opening sequence more as sometimes it is too slow and at others it is too much to start off with. The answers we got were very constructive feedback. From that we know how we could improve our opening sequence. The film didn’t apply as well to both genders or all social status or personalities. If we were to film again and try to make the film appeal to more people we would and students into the background of the school corridor or have different personality friends of Poppy and briefly acknowledge her . These people will come across with different personalities by the way that the speak, dress or by there ethnicity.
Although the music works well with the film, it could come across as a music video because the track is playing all the way through. If we had better equipment like a big budgeted film company, the lighting and depth of the film quality would be improved.

What do you think of the backing track? Does it fit in with the sequence? What Genre do you think it might be?

Half of the people said that they would go to see it in the cinema, but the other half said they would wait for it to come out on DVD. One person from the DVD half said that if the film was well advertised, he would probably go and see it in the cinema.
These storyboads were created before we filmed are opening sequence. We already had are actor and setting ready for us to film, and all that was left to do was to create the storyboards themsevles before the shots was filmed.

While filming are opening sequence we tried to maintain to the storyboard as much as possible. However, the majority of the storyboard is the same as the film but we have added in some more shots to make the film better.

When we began to edit our film, we decide on what tracking music we would use and we added a 2 snap shots towards the opening sequence. This was not placed on the storyboads as we wern't certain if we were going to change or tweek which shots.

Write a Textural Analysis of a Promotional Poster of Batman The Dark Knight

This poster to promote the Dark Knight film is very simple but shows a lot. It is a brick wall with black circle eyes and a red batman figure for a mouth. Above the eyes is the Jokers line ‘why so serious’. Then underneath is the title of the film ‘The Dark Knight’. The dark knight is about the Joker causing destruction in Gotham city due to the fact that criminals are unable to because of batman.

When you first see this poster it is gives us a view that it is graffiti on an ally wall.

When you think of graffiti as a crime, you wouldn’t think that it would be to do with big time criminals, but just by the under minded, inexperience ones. But as Batman cleaned up the streets of all criminals, it is significant as to do a small time/undisturbed crime like graffiti because it wouldn’t be taken seriously to the batman, hence the slogan “why so serious”.

The graffiti face reminds us of the joker’s face of over the top clown makeup. The batman shaped mouth is of Batman. It seems to be painted in a blood red. This is significant because the joker threatens the city with destruction and death if the batman doesn’t give himself. People do die in according to this. It is saying that Batman has peoples blood spilt on him as he won’t compromise with the criminals. The dark circles of eyes symbolises the baggage of the burden that is on the Batman, also the hard darken times it’s for him, hence the title “The Dark Knight.

The poster looking like the Joker is a comparison as usually there will be a promotional poster based on the hero himself. But as the death of Heath Ledger (who plays the Joker) suddenly happened. Warner Bro’s decided to pay tribute and use more posters that were made the Jokers role so it will notify more people. Also, as this poster symbolises the Joker, it shows that this film won’t just be a typical hero defeat villain film. It lets us identify the other side that there is to the film.

The dark knight is a film with action and suspense, when you think of meaning of mystery, which is exactly what this poster gives off. If people haven’t seen the trailer of the dark knight or don’t know the film, when they see the poster they will have to look at it twice. It makes people want to look into it more and understand the idea and concept of this poster and wonder what it has to relate to the film. Although the targeted audience is 16 – 24 males, the poster also targets the film at people who like mystery. as of the death of Heath Ledger, the target audience can be opened to women as well. Because he starred in the film '10 things I hate about you' ( a classic romantic comedy) women might just go to the cinema and see the dark knight, just because of Heath Ledger is playing the joker.

How is Youth Represented in the Opening Sequence of Skins?

In the opening sequence of skins each character as teenagers are represented in many different contrasting ways, Teenageness is a significant ‘in-between’ period, and teen drama deals with the stuff of adolescent anxiety: friendship, love, sex. Skins deals with most of these problems: relationship; the demands of studying; peer group pressure and so on.
When the scene first starts off, we see an extreme close-up shot of the main character (Tony) face in his bed. Even before his alarm goes off, he is already awake. This could indicate a personality perspective, like him being organised, or him planning what he will do later on as he looks like he is thinking.
When the camera zooms out from a close-up to a high angle long shot we get a view of that his bed is already neat even though he is still in it. This could indicate the state of mind and personal traits that he has. His duvet cover is of a man and woman printed on naked. From this we know that this show will entertain us with adult/teenager nature. This also signifies the concept of typical teenage boys mind. This also signifies the concept of this teenage boy’s mind of maybe sex. We soon find out his interests on sex soon on.
Tony’s alarm had gone off after he was already awake. He was probably awake before his alarm had gone off because of the fact that he was planning his day in his head before he got up but keeps everything to a timed schedule. When he gets out of his bed he starts his work out. There is non-diegetic music being played that fits in when he’s doing his work out. Tony gives us the impression that he is proud of his body as when he is in his mirror he gives a masculine pose and strengthens his arm. When he does this the shots are
An alarm beep seems to have gone off from his watch, so he goes to his window to look across the street to see a women coming out of the shower to get dressed. Tony stares at this woman like he is under her spell because down below on the street we see his sister Effie walking home from what we presume a night out on the town. When she tries to get her brothers attention she has to wait a bit before he actually notices her. This indicates that this is routine for both of them as Effie doesn’t seem too bothered about the fact that her brother is admiring a naked thirty year old women. Again it certifies that his is there morning routine when Tony turns on his stereo full volume and his Dad comes raging in swearing, shouting and stating ‘every fuckin morning’. Although helping his sister sneak in Tony seems to get a kick out of messing with his father as he has a smirk on his face and mocks his Dad by saying it’s broken. He again annoys his Dad by spending along time in the bathroom, locking the door then climbing out of the window to go to the downstairs kitchen. In comparison to his father Tony doesn’t retaliate to swearing or shouting he simply silent annoys him without being caught. We see that this father and son are completely different from one another. Tony takes pride in his body, while his father is out of shape, like I stated before their way of dealing with subtle conflict is different.
Tony’s character may first appear as a typical teenage boy for the first few seconds of this opening sequence but he seems a very intellectual, articulate and organised teenager. At the start of the scene when he is in his room there is a high angle long shot of how tidy his room is compared to his sister. Effie’s room is quite typical for a teenage girl. Her curtains are drawn so it is quite a dark atmosphere. There are clothes on her bed in a messy way. Either to make it look likes a dummy shape of her or to prepare her quickly for school after a night out. Tony’s clothes are folded in his draw neatly to show how organised and precise he is. Is interests are before his time. The posters on his bedroom wall are of old European films such as ‘blow up’ and ‘8 and a half’. The book he reads in the bathroom is called ‘Nousea’ which again is a European book.
As well as Tony being in control of his dad he also seems to be in control of his friends. As he’s walking out of his house he phones four of his friends but one doesn’t answer. When Tony first tried to reach his first friend we see his phone ringing on a plate from a close up, but then we see a long shot of how untidy his room is compared to Tony’s. He calls one of his friends who also might seem intellectual like him. It is a girl who is playing the clarinet. She seems to stand up to Tony because she complains to him about calling her and she hangs up when he asks her not to. So here she is in control. Tony also calls his girlfriend who he calls ‘nips’. She doesn’t seem to like this but he thinks it is funny. ‘Nips’ doesn’t stand up to Tony as the other girl does. When Tony asks her to have sex with his friend Sid she is reluctant but in the end agrees. When he rang her ‘nips’ was getting ready. She seems to take care in getting ready and in her looks. Unlike Effie who rushed in the morning and took of her make up roughly with a cloth.
When Tony rings his friends he is talking in a rush like he has everything planned out and wants to get it done today. The reason why he calls everyone is to get his friend to lose his virginity and he wants ‘nips’ to help him out the most.
In this scene quite a lot of slang is used. Swearing and bad language is perpetuated indefinitely throughout, and the use of cockney and colloquial is very common. But to some surprise it is mostly used by the Dad. It is a use of comic role reversal. The youths represented represents each character differently as each teenager in society today acts and is different.

http://www.artofthetitle.com/media/film/2009/coraline_contact.jpg

In the first slide it shows us what the film is called. Because the film is a name of a girl we can tell that the film is going to be about and mostly related to her. The name is presented in the middle of the slide and seems to be as if it has been stiched on as there are threads at the start and end of the name. There is also a button to replace the 'O' in the name. This incdicates what the film will be like and hints at the audience what the film will be asscoiated with. It also gives off a creepy/disturbing film, and what helps this is the dullish colours used in the background. The background also helps to add an effect towards the title as it looks like it was crafted as well.

The secound slide comes to an open window, which we see is set at night. We can see an inocent but mysterious doll which looks like it is coming down at us because the shot is filmed at a low angle. One of our first instincts when we see the doll is to wonder if this is Coralline. The doll seems to have buttons for eyes, which relates back to the first slide of the opening titles. What else we see seems to be like needles or some mechanical device reaching out for the doll which indicates that it must be some kinds of hands. The hands can remind us of Edward Scissor hands ( inocent but dangerous). That is how we see this slide, the doll inocent and the hands dangerous. From this shot we can tell that the film is animated, but not exactly how. The significance to which this is set at night is that most mysterious evnts happens in the cover of darkfall.
In the next slide the doll from earlier is laying on what seems to be a work tabel and differnet types of tools at each side. These tools look old fashioned and rusted which again sends off the creepy factor. The Edward Scissor hand like mechanism is placed on the doll in a way which looks like it is holding it down. But as the doll is smiling it could persue as if the hand is placing the doll down gently. Although this could be seen as a trickery disguise to us because with buttons for eyes we can't see emotion. We wonder what is going to happen to the doll as in a way it looks vulnerable. This is why it is as a bird’s eye view shot because we are in a higher (better) position then the doll.

The following slide is a close up of what seems to be the doll. From the close –up we can only see the dolls head which has been scalped and as we can see has just had its button eyes removed. Although we fell distraught and creeped out by this slide, we look at the dolls mouth. it is still smiling and hasn't yet been fiddled with. But we can see that the mouth has been stiched together to hold a smile. From this we are unable to see pain and emotion, as probably thought out by the mechanical hands. This is the first slot were we see credits of peoples names of the film. It is just in normal font with a pattern underneath it, not to take away the attention from the shot.

This fifth slide is more of a medium shot where we can see half of the dolls body. So far this is the most creppiest and disturbing. the doll is completly plain with no eyes, hair or clothes. The needle hand has gripped the doll back by its head, which leaves the mouth wide open for which seems like sand to be poured in. What makes this shot so disturbing is that the doll looks weak, limp and helpless while the needle hand is puting force on it for the mouth to open. Again we see a name of who was part of the film in the same font.

This last shot is of a tray 0f differnet buttons, which seems to take up the whole space. It lokks like it is a high- medium - corner shot. The hand is over the buttons and seems to be chosing a pair. From this we now understand that the hand is probably creating a new doll. Each pair of buttons are different size and differnt colour, which makes us wonder how unique and important making the doll is to the hand. Once again, the name crediting continues.
